Deloitte's 2026 chemical industry outlook has cut its global production growth forecast to roughly 2 percent for this year, and industry executives are telling researchers they're not expecting the recovery they'd hoped for. European producers face an added squeeze: natural gas costs running roughly two and a half times what US producers pay, and plant closures have hit roughly 9 percent of European capacity since 2022, a sixfold increase in closure announcements over that period. The self-inflicted capacity crunch from the opening story is a useful lesson precisely because it shows how much of freight volatility is behavior, not fundamentals. Shippers who panic and front-load create the shortage they feared. Shippers who can see the underlying schedule of bunker adjustments, the actual capacity additions coming online, and the real reliability data on their lanes are far less likely to make that mistake.
