XENETA WEEKLY OCEAN CONTAINER SHIPPING MARKET UPDATE – 29.01.2026

The pre-Lunar New Year cargo rush is behind us, so the market is set to turn further in the favor of shippers rather than carriers with further softening freight rates.

Latest Xeneta ocean container shipping data highlights are provided below quotes from Xeneta Chief Analyst Peter Sand.

Peter Sand, Xeneta Chief Analyst:

“Back in December, Xeneta data clearly indicated that carriers were going to ramp up offered capacity in January to capitalize on traditionally stronger demand at the start of the year. That is exactly what has happened on the main trades out of the Far East, but capacity is outweighing demand with the inevitable downward impact on freight rates.

“On 1 January, average spot rates on the trade from Far East to US West Coast spiked 30%. Since then, offered capacity has increased 6% with spot rates falling 18%.

“It is a similar story on other Far East fronthauls, with average spot rate declines since 1 January of -15% into US East Coast, -5% into North Europe and -11% into the Mediterranean.

“It looks like the pre-Lunar New Year cargo rush is behind us, so the market is set to turn further in the favor of shippers rather than carriers with further softening freight rates.”
