Using XSI®-C Data

Xeneta supports ocean container market players that require regulated indices to benchmark and contract with the eight EU BMR-compliant global lanes shown above.

The fair-use of XSI-C indices data as it appears on this website is free of charge for internal viewing purposes only.

  • To help you benefit from regulated XSI-C indices features, we grant legally protected and regulation-compliant licenses. 

  • Xeneta data supporting XSI-C indices are market-validated and relied on daily by several hundred enterprise BCOs, leading forwarders and major carriers. 

  • The XSI-C complies with EU BMR rules, which are stricter than those by IOSCO governing other indices. 

  • XSI-C indices enable the use of  Ocean Container Freight Derivatives (OCFDs); they allow users to benefit from hedge-accounting rules and reduce P&L volatility. 

  • XSI-C indices are publicly available and transparent—enhancing trust with clients and oversight bodies.

What is the XSI® - C?

The XSI® - C stands for the Xeneta Shipping Index by Compass. It's EU BMR compliant and ready for index-linked contracting and derivatives.

The XSI® - C is the container shipping industry's most transparent and trusted container rates index.  It delivers the most in-depth and most accurate representation of the container freight market.

The  XSI® - C  reports rolling short-term Freight All Kind (FAK) rates valid for less than 32 days, for a 40' container.

The XSI® - C  displays daily median prices with a 2-day lag.

XSI® - C Index Levels are calculated and monitored by Compass Financial Technologies and are published on each index release Date at 16:15 London time.

Xeneta also reports for the long-term contract market, contracts longer than 88 days via the Xeneta Shipping Index (XSI®) Contract Market. A monthly XSI® data report with commentary is released free of charge. Access it here.

The XSI® for the contract market is not EU BMR compliant.

What is the XSI® - C data based on?

The XSI® - C data used to build the indices are committed quotes reported to Xeneta by its customers. From this pool of data, we publish the arithmetic median. The rates are made up of anonymized and aggregated data ingested from leading global freight forwarders and shippers. 

Xeneta data represents over $20B in ocean freight spend. It is trusted by some of the world's leading companies to power their transportation and supply chain strategies. 

The XSI® delivers the most in-depth and most accurate representation of the container freight market. It is the go-to and most trusted source for container freight rates in the industry. 

Quality
The Xeneta ocean freight rate data collection and processing are in line with the highest quality standards. As a contributor under the EU BMR rules, Xeneta has adopted a Code of Conduct in line with EU BMR constraints.

Frequency
Data is collected every day by Xeneta and provided, after quality check and potential adjustment, to the Index Calculation Agent.

The daily XSI® - C currently reports on 8 regional trade lanes.

What are the charges included in the calculation of the XSI® - C?

The XSI® - C includes all charges and surcharges (fuel, security, etc.) that need to be paid in order to ship a container. The index does not include any charges associated with dangerous goods, heavy or otherwise special equipment.

Terminal handling charges are included for certain routes. Please visit the "What is the port structure" question to learn more. 

The XSI® - C deals purely with the ocean component of the freight rate and as such it does not include any pre-carriage or on-carriage charges.

Finally the XSI® - C does not include any fees associated with premium or guaranteed services.

Why is the XSI® - C the most accurate shipping index?

Xeneta has the most exhaustive set of contracted ocean freight rate data covering most of the global trades. It works with all the market players from the biggest freight forwarders to smaller shippers making the index the most representative
of the container shipping market. 

The XSI® - C rates represent the actual movement of the market reporting rate fluctuations on the actual day the rates change; effectively on the day the rate is valid from. 

Xeneta acts as the data contributor for the XSI® - C indices.

 The contributor freight rate data collection and processing are in line with the highest quality standards. As a contributor under the EU BMR rules, Xeneta has adopted a Code of Conduct in line with EU BMR constraints.

Who and how can the XSI® - C be used?

Anyone can use the XSI® - C data as it appears on the site. We believe that an informed industry is a win for all of the global trade. The XSI® - C data is regularly used to support commentary by leading global industry and business publications.

The XSI-C indices are available on Bloomberg and Reuters under the ticker symbols: XSIC(trade lane code).


Media Outlets / Analysts

Use of the XSI® - C data is permitted for all, but we require that you please accredit the data to the Xeneta Shipping Index by Compass (XSI® - C).
